Emergency Preparedness

The town will announce emergency situations and actions to be taken on radio station WGMD, 92.7 Mhz, and TV station WBOC, channel 6.

If you'd like to review what steps you might take to be prepared for emergencies, we suggest you look at the site of the Delaware Citizen Corps; pay special attention to the videos you can see.

Of course here at the beach we must be aware that extremely strong storms can result in flooding, although that result has been ameliorated greatly by our improved protective dune.  We haven't had serious flooding for several years (this is written in the spring of 2009).  High winds can cause damage to buildings, but again we've not had any more than trivial damage for several years.

Dewey Beach has been actively working on an Emergency Preparedness Plan. We are please to report we have completed our plan and it has been turned in to Jim Weldin, director of Homeland Security who will review it and then pass it on the the State. All towns have been required to do this and there have been several meetings held in Dewey, to work on this plan. Members of this committee are Commissioner Mike Eisenhauer (chairman), Vivian Barry, Bob Barry, Larry Tush, & Commissioner Del.l Tush. Meetings have been held with the chief of the Rehoboth Fire Department and Maria Sadler of DNREC. Gordon Elliott (Town Manager) and Sam Mackert (Dewey Cheif of Police) were also present and greatly contributed to the meeting.

Commissioner Dale Cooke and Commissioner Dell Tush as Dewey representatives attended the DEMA WEATHER SUMMIT held in Dover on July 20th. This summit was attended by Governor Minner, Secretary of Homeland Security David B. Mitchell, J.D. & William L. Carwile, lll who served as the Federal Coordinating Officer for disaster events from 1996 until 2005. As FCC Mr. Carwile served as the representative of the President and DHS/FEMA during major disaster and emergency declarations, including 9-11 and Hurrican Katrina. Also guest speakers included Gary S. Szatkowski, Meteorolgist-in-charge NOAAs National Weather Service, Philadelphia/Mt. Holly, N.J. Holly, N.J.

Commissioner Dell Tush and Gordon Elliott, Town Manager, also attended the GOVERNORS CONFERENCE ON THE AVIAN FLU on February 21 and THE DEMA SUMMIT on February 24 this year in Dover.

On July 25th, 8 Dewey employees and three Dewey Commissioners attended a five hour NIMS (National Incident Manament System) Training Seminar as invited guests of the Town of Millville. The class was under the instruction of Jim Weldin and was extensive training on what to do in a large scale emergency such as a hurricane. In attendance were Gordon Elliot (Town Manager) Bill Mears (Building Official & Code Enforcrement Officer), Alvin Huffman (Msaintenance Supervisor), Joyce Poole (Administrative Assistant), Barbara Kyewski (Administrative Assistant), Penny Garnett (Finanicial Administrator), LaToya Weatherly (Administrative Assistant for the Police Department), Frank Johnson (Parking Supervisor), Dale Cooke (Commissioner), Mike Eisenhauer (Commissioner) and Dell Tush (Commissioner).

Once the Dewey Beach Plan has been approved by the state, it will be posted on the web site.
