2024 Summary
Spring letters to members on dues renewal and information on the formation of Dewey in Bloom
Continuation of 9am Friday breakfast gatherings at Starboard. We’ve had several guests throughout the year.
One of our organization’s purposes is to help town residents and property owners to get to know each other and to help the town in general. Implementation of occasional Happy Hours at Dewey sites including: Grottos, Dewey Eat and Starboard Claw. We invited other local support groups like town support staff, commissioners and Dewey in Bloom as guests and had large turnouts in the summer months. We thank all hosts and attendees. Let us know if you wish to host an evening.
We partnered with Dewey in Bloom to help beautify the town. The DBCL sponsored a planter, we included Dewey in Bloom volunteers and sponsors in our happy hours, and our president, Diane Hanson, served as one of their gardening specialists and as a member of the Steering Committee.
Sent out periodic notices to members on town issues including noise ordinances, expansion of premises, voting and residency requirements. Several DBCL members attended town meetings to be sure their complaints about noise were heard.
Planned and held Candidates Forum (no election required) on 9/24 at the Lifeguard Station that included questions for present commissioners and updates from police chief and town manager. Concluded forum with our DBCL Annual meeting and board elections and presented a tribute relating to James “Jim" Tyler for his years of service to the town and the Civic League
Obtained a table for Civic League members at the Dewey Beach End of Year Beach Party on 9/14/2024
Modernized our communication system to allow for information to be sent to members as needed.
2023 Summary
- July 2023 - Donation to Police Department for new ATV/Gator
- The new vehicle replaced an older model that was no longer repairable. The new ATV is an all-weather, enclosed vehicle that can be used year-round and on the beach.
- July 2023 - Donation for mulch on Coastal Highway median
- The DBCL donated $3,800 to cover the cost of mulch and it's installation. Maintaining the center islands in town are important to portray a well-kept town - focusing on beautification has shown to reduce the tendency for people to litter.
- June 2023 - Oceanside street signs installed
- In cooperation with the Developing Artists Collaboration, the Civic League created artistic street signs that were installed in the spring. The purpose is to help people - especially those not familiar with the area - to know what street they are on when walking the beach.
- April 2023 - Reception for new Police Chief
- Chief Constance Speake gave a review of her background and experience to property owners. She also reviewed some of her ideas for managing the Police Department and potential changes. The Town Manager also gave a brief overview of improvements being made at Town Hall. The reception provided a great forum for property owners to ask questions and get to know their local leaders.
- December 2022 - Donation of a pet microchip scanner
- The DBCL donated a pet microchip scanner to the town to help reunite lost pets with their owners. Previously, town officials and residents would need to transport stray animals to a local veterinarian to be scanned for a microchip. Having a scanner at Town Hall greatly improves the process of reuniting lost pets with their owners.
