During late summer, our area experienced storm activity with sudden high winds that caused a large number of umbrellas to be blown into the ocean. Those umbrellas are just now washing up on the beach in Dewey.
The Town has received numerous reports of umbrellas spotted in the surf during low tide. Some are partially buried top down in the tide line, which poses a potential hazard to those entering the water. Our maintenance crew and beach concessions provider are working to inspect the beach at low tide, and remove any umbrellas. If you notice umbrellas in the tide line, you're encouraged to call the Dewey Beach Town Hall at (302) 227-6363, or make a report through the 311 System. Please provide a street location so we can direct staff appropriately.
Those accessing the beach should use caution when entering the ocean. Pet owners should also be mindful while allowing dogs to enjoy the water.
