Seal Season at the Beach

Winter is seal season here on the Delaware coast. It is common to see seals resting on the beach during their southern migration. If you are concerned about the welfare of a seal, please contact MERR Institute at (302)228-5029.

Seals are protected by the Marine Mammal Protection Act, making it illegal to disturb, feed, or touch them. In most circumstances, seals move to the beach to either escape a predator, or to rest. By approaching a seal, it is likely you'll scare the animal back into the water, and towards potential danger. While seals look cute and friendly, they will defend themselves, and potentially bite when frightened. Stay at least 150 feet from seals. Since Dewey is dog-friendly, pet owners should scan the beach prior to allowing their dog off leash. Never allow your dog to come into contact with a seal.

Seal season usually extends into April. We hope our visitors will enjoy spotting these animals from a safe distance!
